The whole thing has taken on the vestiges of what witch hunts used to cause: every slightly askance look could be deemed "bewitched" and every wart on a nose made you a witch and got burnt at the stake. Humankind has a tendency to over- or underreact: first denial of nuclear dangers, then the prophecy of an ice age, now extreme weather.
